Smaks Enterprise · South Africa

A software company organised around a life, not a market.

Smaks Enterprise builds and operates four products for the moments where decisions, deadlines and consequences start to pile up.

Four products. Four moments in a life.

Four separate products, each with its own sign-in. Nothing carries across from one to the next.

  • The Aqilo website: a parent photographing a child’s homework question, beside a panel explaining the method and giving the parent words to use.

The homework years · Grades 1–12

    Aqilo

Homework help for South African families. Built for learners using CAPS, IEB and Cambridge.

A parent who cannot help with the homework, at the moment the child asks.

    Oriva

The university application command center for South African families. Clarity for what comes next.

Many portals, many deadlines, and missing one costs a year.

  • The Alogi website: a funding panel matching a student’s average against two bursaries, showing which one they qualify for.

Why four products, and not one.

Most software is sold by category. We build by stage. A Grade 8 learner, a matric applicant, a university student and a working adult are four different people with four different problems — so they get four different products.

    And everything after

The rail shows the moments we chose to build for — not a journey anyone is expected to follow.

Where this comes from.

For twenty years the work was programmes and people. Youth development programmes that ran for a term. Learners mentored one at a time, over years. Later, programmes designed for organisations to deliver at a scale one person never could.

Different rooms, and the same thing happening in all of them: somebody capable, stuck on something that was never about difficulty.

A programme ends and the room empties. The decision it prepared someone for arrives four months later, at night, on their own. That gap is where the help was needed, and never where the help was. Four products came out of trying to close it.

  • The problem is almost never ability.

A learner who looks like they are failing is usually a learner without a system — no way to see what is due, what matters, and what to do first.

  • Advice does not survive the gap.

A programme runs for a term. The decision it prepared someone for arrives months later, alone, with a deadline attached.

  • A plan should not depend on who your parents know.

Whether a young person gets one is still mostly decided by which school they attended and who happened to be around to help.

  • You cannot be in every room.

Twenty years is long enough to meet the limit of one person helping one person. Software was the only way to be there for the rest.

The company worked in enterprise technology before turning to products people use directly.

A life has more stages than four.

Those moments recur across a life, and most of them still have no software worth the name.

Four is where we started.
